ABOUT THIS ROLE
Summary of Role & Responsibilities
Deacons and Deaconesses are church members who help the Pastor by giving spiritual leadership and caring for the congregation. They are voted in by the church membership to serve a 3-year term, up to a maximum of 7 years. They report to the Pastor and share updates with the church board, and are voting members of the church board.
Who Can Serve?
A Deacon/Deaconess must:
- Be a member of Eau Claire Missionary Church in good standing
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Demonstrate a personal relationship with Jesus, faithful Christian living, and a good reputation in the church and community
- Show the biblical qualities found in Titus 1:5–10, 1 Peter 5:1–5, and 1 Timothy 3:8–1 (These passages describe leaders who are spiritually mature, trustworthy, and Christ-like in character.)
How They Serve
Deacons/Deaconesses share responsibility with the Pastor for:
- Spiritual leadership
- Casting vision for ministry and mission
- Congregational care
- Church discipline when needed
- Protecting the biblical and ethical soundness of teaching
- Helping the church fulfill the Great Commission
- They also work together in unity if there is more than one deacon, meet monthly with the Pastor, and maintain full confidentiality.
The main duties of Deacons and Deaconesses are to:
- Offer prayer, encouragement, guidance, and anointing with oil when requested
- Complete yearly Safety Plan Training and provide a Vulnerable Sector Check as required
- Assist with baptisms and new memberships, being aware of those ready to take these steps
- Visit people in hospital, crisis, or shut-in situations
- Lead the church in caring for those with physical, spiritual, and financial needs
- Cover Sunday service and phone responsibilities if the Pastor is absent or ill
- Support the Pastor personally and spiritually, including helping with the yearly Ministry Performance Review
- Help with church discipline in a spirit of love and prayer
- Assist with communion
- Welcome visitors, newcomers, and guest speakers
- Pray for families in the church and check in on their well-being, sharing concerns with the Pastor
- Look for and mentor future church leaders
- Keep all personal information shared with them strictly confidential
